The global community continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which poses a significant threat, particularly to individuals already afflicted with lung disease. Lung cancer patients have encountered numerous obstacles as a result of the pandemic. A September 2020 article titled “The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on lung cancer patients” published by the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University revealed that out of 161 patients, approximately 95 postponed their scheduled follow-up visits in April 2020. Furthermore, 47 cases were ultimately classified as having experienced delayed admission during the pandemic, necessitating the discontinuation or postponement of their regular anticancer treatments.

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor that manifests in the lung tissues, characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells. The primary risk factor for the development of lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Prolonged exposure to tobacco smoke can also contribute to the development of this disease. The diagnosis of lung cancer is confirmed through biopsy procedures, which are conducted using bronchoscopy or CT guidance. Consequently, treatment options for lung cancer include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, among others.

Furthermore, the escalating investments in research and development of novel drugs, the escalating pollution resulting from rapid industrialization, and the increasing number of smokers are among the factors contributing to the rising prevalence of lung cancer. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2022 report, lung cancer (both small cell and non-small cell) ranks as the second most common cancer in both men and women. Moreover, lung cancer stands as the leading cause of cancer-related mortality, accounting for nearly 25% of all cancer deaths. Additionally, the 2021 report by the American Lung Association highlights that while lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths among both genders, the national survival rate has witnessed a 14.5% increase over the past five years. Consequently, these factors collectively drive the growth of the lung cancer therapeutics market.
